There’s a buzz in Winston-Salem, in North Carolina and beyond, about the Innovation Quarter and what’s happening here.
It’s not just because of the mind-bending research and advancements that take place, thanks to the remarkable scientists and researchers and companies devoted to their incredible work of finding tomorrow’s treatments and cures. Rather, it’s also the energy emerging through the activation of a space that’s been in the making for 20 years. The concept of creating a research-based future took root in downtown Winston-Salem in the early 1990s when the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology of Wake Forest School of Medicine moved into the first downtown building along with eight researchers from Winston-Salem State University.
A decade later, plans were announced for a biotechnology-based research park that would spur a new economy in a new century. As with any nascent idea, there have been fits and starts, revisions and new ideas brought to the table. That’s the way innovation works. It’s why the Innovation Quarter is growing beyond the biomedical sciences and encompassing information technology and clinical IT services and businesses.
Today, plans for the Innovation Quarter are advancing rapidly and creating a powerful statement about our commitment to collaboration—between scientists, physicians, business leaders and our broader community. What we are creating at the Innovation Quarter is an ecosystem that allows ideas to take hold and supports creativity, innovation and sustained business growth in every way possible.
That is the simple goal of the Innovation Quarter. We believe a diverse mix of people and ideas, business and academia, will thrive here. That this also is helping to improve the vibrancy of the city’s downtown area makes the Innovation Quarter that much more compelling.
We’ve only seen the start of the experience we expect to hurtle through in the next decade and beyond. The Innovation Quarter will do everything it can to promote the ideals of urban life—science, arts, technology, lifestyle. Our goal is to make this a great place to Work, Live, Learn and Play.
We invite you to join us in this grand mission. Come see us. Be a part of what we’re doing. The Innovation Quarter is a place to make Winston-Salem and North Carolina proud.
