Explore the role of placemaking as the Innovation Quarter takes over the programming for this unique Venture Café Winston-Salem Thursday Night Gathering. Join us at 5 pm for Connections. Lessons Learned: Design Approach to Public/Private Parks and Paths
In this panel discussion, attendees will learn about the design approach to many public and private Winston-Salem parks and greenways such as Bailey Park, Quarry Park, Artivity Park, Merschel Park and Long Branch Trail. Panelists will discuss lessons learned in designing a public vs. private park and challenges met throughout the design process to implementation. Panelists include Christy Turner, Stimmel; Kimberly Horn, Stimmel and Pete Fala, STITCH.
Placemaking Through the Lens of Economic Development
In this panel discussion, attendees will discuss how economically driven placemaking initiatives reflect the needs of the larger community as well as obstacles to meeting those needs. Panelists include Will Partin, Wexford Science + Technology; Kyle Haney, Forsyth County; Evan Raleigh, City of Winston-Salem; and Mary Charlotte Hinkle, Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership.

Revitalizing Community Neighborhoods Through Placemaking
Please update session to read, “Dr. Notis Pagiavlas, WSSU marketing professor and director of WSSU’s Center for Entrepreneurship (CFE) will lead a presentation on East Winston revitalization efforts, highlighting the recent project, “Stake Your Claim” which is supported through the S.G. Atkins Community Development Corp. The hands-on project paired WSSU students with seven small East Winston businesses to develop a marketing strategy and signage to increase the visibility of the businesses and promote the area.
Secret Ingredients to Successful Placemaking: Activation
In this discussion, attendees will hear stories and best practices for creating a sense of place through activation—events, activities, art and more. Panelists include Larry Barron, Founder/Curator of The Word of Mouth Wednesdays Experience; Richard Emmett, The Ramkat; and Margaret Norfleet-Neff, Cobblestone Farmers Market.
