Event Overview
Recruitment and retention of nurses has been an ongoing challenge with nurses feeling burnt out, unsupported, and unrecognized. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, this challenge only grew as nurses were pushed to their limits. Although we are out of the pandemic, it is predicted that North Carolina is going to be one of the most impacted states in the Southeast by the nursing shortage.
In response to this, a planning team has been formed to better understand the core challenges and factors related to nursing shortages locally and throughout the state. With representation from the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, Wake Forest School of Medicine, and Innovation Quarter, we are looking to identify opportunities for greater workforce development and create partnerships with local nursing programs to support the advancement of the nursing workforce.
This half-day event will serve as the initial launch to forge connections with our regional nurse leaders, nurse educators, liaisons, and stakeholders to explore valuable partnership opportunities with short-term and long-term efforts to address nursing workforce challenges.
Our Goals
- Explore valuable partnership opportunities with short-term and long-term efforts to address nursing workforce challenges.
- Address nursing workforce, development, and training challenges both in North Carolina and nationally.
- Identify innovative and impactful ideas and propose best practices.
- Inform a proposed infrastructure for a nursing “Center of Excellence” in Winston-Salem.
- Organize sessions to allow participants to discuss their ideas and feedback on workforce and training challenges with internal and external stakeholders.
- Create a safe environment for open dialogue on the challenges facing the nursing workforce and education pipeline.

Diamond received her ADN from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Charlotte, NC in 2003 where she served as the President of the Student Nurses Association. She went on to receive her BSN in 2006 from UNC Greensboro. In 2010, Diamond completed her Master’s in Healthcare Administration from Pfeiffer University. She is currently employed as a Director for the Outpatient and Community Care Management Department for Atrium Health and is Certified as an American Case Manager and Board-Certified Nurse Executive.
Diamond is a volunteer with the Cabarrus County Ombudsman program for Adult Care Homes, Cabarrus County Schools, NCNA Awards Committee, ANA Awards Committee, and the YMCA as a Camp Nurse for Camp Thunderbird. Diamond is also a Board Member of Daymark Services in Cabarrus County, the NC Nurses Foundation, and Communities in Schools Charlotte – Mecklenburg. She has been a member of the NCNA/ANA and ACHE.
In November 2017, Diamond was elected to serve as a councilwoman for the Town of Harrisburg, NC. She is the first African American woman to serve on the council. Making history again, Diamond was re-elected to serve as a councilwoman for the Town of Harrisburg in November 2021. In 2022, Diamond made history again by becoming the first African American woman to be elected to the NC House of Representatives from Cabarrus County.
Diamond is married with three children a 26-year-old daughter who lives in Raleigh, a 22-year-old daughter who lives in Brooklyn, NY, and a 17-year-old son at Hickory Ridge High School.
