The Swedish, woman-owned bioanalytical and biomarker services company Mercodia opened its doors to their new laboratory in the Innovation Quarter’s One Technology Place.

Combined with their already-established business and distribution offices, the addition of the One Technology Place laboratory marks Winston-Salem as the company’s U.S. headquarters.

Founded in 1991, Mercodia collaborates with pharmacological and biotechnology companies to offer resources such as data collection, biomarker kits, and project management services during drug development. The new laboratory will allow the company to broaden its capacity to provide bioassay testing for preclinical and clinical programs in the U.S.

“Mercodia hasn’t been this excited to start something new since we first opened our U.S. presence in 2005,” said Mercodia President Carissa Jones. “We believe Winston-Salem will help us identify, hire, retain, and advance skilled employees that will drive our value proposition in the bioanalytical service arena to better support preclinical and clinical drug development.”

The company has six employees in the U.S. utilizing its new, 800-square-foot wet lab space. Mercodia plans to expand its space to accommodate 25 scientists in the coming years. Eventually, the company will relocate their administrative offices currently on Stratford Road to One Technology Place as well.

“Mercodia has a global reputation for delivering nimble support services and precise, user-friendly products that reduce time and cost for development of new therapies,” said Innovation Quarter head of biotech and life science ecosystem development Isaac Perry. “We are thrilled they have chosen Innovation Quarter as a location to expand their global footprint, and know their impact in our ecosystem will be extremely positive, and realized immediately. This continues to bolster Winston-Salem as a premier location for life sciences organizations to expand and grow.”

“As we continue to grow biotechnology and life sciences as a key industry in Winston-Salem, our collaborative approach is working,” says Mark Owens, President and CEO of Greater Winston-Salem, Inc. “We’re able to deliver a rich ecosystem and growing talent pool along with location and cost advantages that make Winston-Salem stand out as the best choice for these companies.”

Mercodia joins the rapidly-expanding cohort of medical research and biotechnology companies uniquely found in the Innovation Quarter including Axiom Space, Brinter and BMI Organ Bank among others.
