Incumbent Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines and his challenger have only faced of for mayor once, when JoAnne Allen lost her write-in attempt in 2016. However, the two have faced off plenty of times at Winston-Salem City Council meetings, where Allen has spoken during the public comment period and denounced Joined, as well as the rest of the council.
